Perodua expects 6-10percent drop in sales
Last year, the carmaker sold about 167,000 units of vehicles, an increase of three per cent compared to 2007.
Currently, Perodua has a 30.5 per cent share in the local market.
"Our sales for the first two months of this year amounted to about 24,000 units, a 10 per cent drop compared to the previous corresponding period," said managing director Datuk Syed Abdull Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar.
This was due to seasonal factors such as the festive breaks earlier this year, he said at a ceremony to hand over vehicles to 12 local institutions of higher learning in Rawang today.
According to him, a clearer picture of how the industry will perform is likely to emerge from this month onwards.
Perodua will be launching its new multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in the fourth quarter of this year.
"Hopefully, the launch of the new model will bring up our sales," Syed Hafiz said, adding that the carmaker will have three strong models next year comprising the Myvi, ViVA and new MPV.
Perodua expects to spend from RM30 million to RM40 million on the car-scrapping programme this year.
"Our scrapping programme started a few days ago and to date, 200 to 300 people have visited the Perodua website to check out the programme," Syed Hafiz said.
"A lot of people have shown an interest in it. By the end of April, we will know just how good the response is," he said.
Asked whether the programme would be extended, Syed Hafiz said the company would review the programme in the fourth quarter this year to decide whether to continue after one year, based on the response.
At today's ceremony, Perodua gave 12 Myvi units totalling about RM480,000 to the institutions of higher learning taking part in the Perodua Eco-Challenge, a competition to test the participant's engineering capabilities and spur the development of new technologies.
Among the institutions are Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Mara and Universiti Industri Selangor.
The others are Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Universiti Islam Antarabangsa, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Politeknik Ungku Omar, Universiti Malaya and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia.

Perodua Viva...a year after review..
As for me, a middle-working class citizen, with an average of RM2k monthly income, single but looking forward to start a family which mean I have to save for the 'future event,' renting an apartment with two other apartment mates, having to drive in a cramp city environment, less long distance driving...yup, these definitely justifies the word 'great' for me toward my Perodua Viva.
Since I've drove her for a year, I might as well make a review. Maybe someone out there are thinking of buying Viva as his/her first car. (This was my first car after all)
First thing first, the price.
Ok, to be honest, I think Viva is a bit overpriced for a compact car. Mine is 1.0SX (manual). < click it for the spec. If you are hoping for a low monthly installment, make sure you have more for the required 10% down payment. Meaning, at least RM5k or more. Ask the salesperson for a complete calculation. Don't worry, he/she wouldn't mind your cerewet-ness. So be cerewet..hehe
Now..living with it..
- This is a simple compact small car. So don't expect any 'sport car' driving experience when driving it. It was made for practicality and city driving. And it does a splendid job on that. Parking is easy. You can fit in almost any parking space. Even in a tight space and no-parking space. Just beware for the encik polis..hehe. Turning to a junction or making a U-turn is also easy. It's a small car after all..
- Cornering is quite decent. As I mentioned earlier, this is not a sport car. So don't push her too much. The car suspension systems are made for comfort. It made the car feel wobbly like a boat when driving on an uneven road. If you go over 90 km/h, the wobbliness can be quite apparent and not for the fainted heart as it can be bit scarifying. The fastest I did was 150 km/h only...last only for about 10 second. More than that...hmm..I haven't got married yet...
- They say you can load 5 adults in it. Driver, 1 front seat passenger and 3 rear seat passengers. Well, that is not entirely true though. Actually it's more suitable and comfortable for only 4 average size adults. More than that and your Viva will feel underpower even for a 1000cc engine. But that depends on how you drive la..the way you shift between gear etc. Unless it's an auto..
- Storage is also not a problem if you are still single like me. But as a family car....I don't recommend it la. The boot is quite small.
- If you are thinking of doing some modification, then prepare to splash a lot of cash. I'm a man and I have to admit that Viva is a bit girlish. I mean, most of the people attracted to this car are female. I bought this car just for its fuel saving value since petrol was expensive back then. So, if you want to make this car looks more manly....err..make sure you have enough money to buy food by the end of the month. I did try but, I gave up at the end...girlish pun girlish la..
- Almost forgot, for long distance driving, it can be a real pain.. The sound proofing is just ear blasting. You literally can hear the sound of the engine (reving or not), the sound of the road surface regadless of your tire type when driving, and you have to occasionally shout when talking since it's damn noisy. The seat comfort is ok but the surrounding is just....too..noisy. especially in high speed. I've drove from Klang to Ulu Yam, to LCCT, back and forth and man...make sure to blast your sound system to hide the annoying noise.
So, basically, if you want to own a Viva, make sure you are
1. Single
2. Not a wealthy person. If you are, buy a Swift.
3. Less long-distance driving route.
4. Saving for 'future event'.
5. Has an extra cash for down payment.
6. Doesn't mind being called girlish (if you're a man) by some douchbag who think his/her opinion is worth mentioning.
7. Need a car only as a mean of transportation, not showing off.
8. Proton Basher. (I'm not ok..I bash no car..)
9. Um..not rich..did I wrote that already..well, basically, this is the main reason..hehe..
p/s: I'm giving my Viva to my brother. New car for me..hehe..what car? next post..

What New?..
TATA NANO

Look at that car, look at how small it is! The car was launch 2 days ago in India. Tata Nano aim for family of 5 (average I think in India) that is usually on two wheels (get what I'm trying to say here).
What really caught my attention is how they make the car cheap, the picture below will explain it to you.

Some people concern with the release of the car since India already have a big problem with road congestion. Will making car much more accessible to the public worsened the situation? I'm not really sure.

However, if only the car have air-conditioner, I think I'll have it...hehe...If you notice, it look somewhat like compact version of Perodua Viva.

Perodua Viva vs Perodua Myvi
Perodua Viva and Perodua Myvi Loan Comparison
May 14, 2007 @ 2:41 am · Filed under Cars, Local News, Malaysian Makes, Perodua, Perodua Viva
We can assume if you buy a Perodua, you’re most likely going to be a very price-sensitive person. If you haven’t read my previous comparison of the Perodua Myvi and Perodua Viva, please click here to read it first. This blog entry focuses on the financial details if you buy a Perodua Viva or a Perodua Myvi.
First, we look at how much the car would cost in monthly repayments over a period of 3, 5 or 7 years assuming a 10% downpayment and 3.88% interest rate. The two variants of the Viva and Myvi I am using here are the Perodua Viva 1000cc Premium with Airbags and ABS, and the Perodua Myvi 1.3 liter Premium with Airbags and ABS. Both are of the automatic transmission variant with metallic paint.
First, let’s look at how much the two cars cost monthly. Over a 5-year loan which is what most people would take, the difference in monthly repayment between the Viva and the Myvi is about RM91.62 a month, or RM1099.44 a year. Over a 7-year loan, it is RM69.70 a month - or RM836.40 a year. If you think of it in monthly terms, an extra RM91.62 a month gets you an upgrade from A-segment to B-segment, more interior width so the rear bench is more comfortable with 3 people seated, and a smoother 4-cylinder engine that makes more power, together with a better power to weight ratio.
But let’s not forget what upgrading to a bigger 1.3 liter 4-cylinder engine will do - increase your fuel consumption. For this one, it’s a little bit tricky. We’ve got two different km per liter figures to play with - Perodua’s optimum situation claims as well as estimated real life scenarios for the Viva, as well as the average reported fuel consumption for the Myvi from the Myvi owners I’ve asked. We also assume a traveling distance of 1500km a month (50km to and fro work daily, times 30 to factor for other misc traveling during weekdays and weekends), and the current RON97 petrol price of RM1.92 per liter.
Using the optimum fuel consumption calculation - you’ll save RM22.60 a month driving the Viva compared to driving a Perodua Myvi. Using the estimated real life scenario fuel consumption calculation, you’ll save RM31.42 a month. This brings the the amount you have to fork out every month for a Viva to RM1,022.02 a month inclusive of 5-year loan monthly installment and fuel expenditure, and for the Myvi - RM1,145.06. Damn, even though these are supposed to be affordable, these cars are looking pretty expensive to run now. The difference between the Myvi and Viva for a 5-year loan in this case is RM123.04, or RM1476.48 a year.
This is of course, a calculation for the first year where your road tax and insurance premium has already been covered in the purchase price. But let’s just keep things simple for the moment. The Myvi has a higher insured value and a larger engine, thus the two items will be more expensive, further widening that RM123.04 gap but it won’t be too big a difference. In terms of percentage, it’s about a 12 percent difference.
What’s RM123.04, or a savings of 12 percent worth to you? Is it worth the upgrade from the Viva to a Myvi? I’m not here to decide for you, just presenting to you the figures so you can decide for yourself.

Perodua Myvi vs Perodua Viva
May 11, 2007 @ 6:42 pm · Filed under Cars, Local News, Malaysian Makes, Perodua, Perodua Viva
I know some of you who are thinking of buying the Perodua Myvi are now considering buying the top of the range Perodua Viva 1000cc Premium instead. So I’m going to do a little comparison here. If you have anything to add, please feel free to comment and contribute to the discussion.
Power
Interestingly, it seems that the same 1.0 liter DVVT EJ-VE engine in the Perodua Viva makes more torque than the Perodua Myvi’s 1.0 liter DVVT EJ-VE engine. The Viva claims to make 90Nm of torque at 3,600rpm, while the Myvi 1.0 liter only makes 88Nm at 3,600rpm - that’s a minor difference of only 2Nm though.
Since the Perodua Viva 1.0 liter would clearly beat the Myvi 1.0 in terms of power to weight ratio, so let’s compare the Myvi 1.3 to the Viva 1.0 Premium instead. The Myvi 1.3 weighs 955kg and puts out 86 horsepower. That’s a power to weight ratio of 0.09 horsepower per kg. As for the Perodua Viva 1000cc Premium, it weighs 800kg and puts out 60 horsepower - that gives it a power to weight ratio of 0.075 horsepower per kg.
So we can conclude that in a drag race, the Viva won’t be able to smoke it’s larger sibling in stock form. That doesn’t mean the Viva is terribly slow - in a previous supermini shootout done together with folks at NST Life & Times, I found that the Myvi effortlessly smoked other superminis with larger 1.5 liter engines.
Another thing to point out is the Perodua Myvi 1.3 liter uses a 4-cylinder engine, and 4-cylinder engines are alot smoother than 3-cylinder engines like the one found in the Perodua Viva. 3-cylinders have more vibration, which might end up being felt by you in the steering wheel and other points in the chassis.
Fuel Economy
According to Perodua’s own charts, the Perodua Viva 1000cc Premium can travel 17.5km per liter of petrol on a combined cycle which I suspect involves alot of light footed driving and highway cruising. This is for the manual transmission. The Myvi 1.3 manual is rated at 17.1km per liter of petrol. Very similar fuel consumption, however the people on the streets who actually own the Myvi 1.3 manual reports actual mileage of about 13 to 14 km per liter if driven frugally.
As for the auto transmission, Perodua says the Myvi 1.3 Auto can get 13.5 km per liter, however the average man on the street usually gets about 10 to 11 km per liter. Comparing it to the Viva 1.0 liter automatic, Perodua says it can get 15.1km per liter, so expect about 12km per liter in reality.
Thus we can assume the Viva automatic should be a little more frugal than the Perodua Myvi automatic, but for the manual transmission models actual fuel economy should prove to be about the same.
Space
The Perodua Viva is actually longer in the interior than the Perodua Myvi at 1845mm compared to the Perodua Myvis 1835mm, but a great margin narrower. Having a long interior is important, it ensures the rear passenger legroom is at comfortable levels, just like the Perodua Myvi’s. However, being narrower the downside is you can’t really fit 3 people in the rear bench comfortably, making the Perodua Viva more of a 4-seater than a 5-seater. The Viva’s boot is only 149 liters with the rear bench upright compared to the Myvi’s 255 liters, significantly smaller, however you can extend this size by dropping the rear passenger bench to create a 449 liter space.
Ride and Handling
Nothing much can be said about the Perodua Myvi’s handling abilities other than the fact that it’ll probably get you to work and back safely. From what I’ve heard from some journalists who’ve driven the car, I think I shouldn’t expect much of the Viva’s either. Which is a shame as the Kelisa was a somewhat fun drive. Many will miss the Kelisa’s zippy DNA which is reportedly missing in the new Viva. If you want a driver’s small car, go get the Proton Savvy.
Equipment levels
One thing I am concerned about is the lack of an integrated CD player head unit in the Perodua Viva, which means Viva owners will have to be careful about where they park their cars lest their mirrors get smashed and their head units stolen. However, this means the CD player can be easily swapped.
The equipment level of the Perodua Viva 1.0 liter standard is disappointing to be honest, not even proper alloy wheels are supplied, instead you are given steel wheels. This means a difference of roughly RM4k on average gets you airbags, ABS, proper alloy wheels, wing mirrors with signal lamps, roof spoiler, and etc. I’m really not sure if it’s worth it or not - I’ll leave it up to you.
The Perodua Myvi on the other hand has just about everything you need in the baseline 1.3 liter model. It also feels more premium because of an interior design that looks abit more higher grade, as well as Optitron-style meters which are self illuminating, unlike the backlit meter clusters of the Perodua Viva.
Safety
Both the Viva Premium and Myvi Premium have dual airbags, antilock brakes - the usual stuff. The Perodua Myvi’s Japanese cousin the 2005 Daihatsu Sirion scored a 4 star score in the Euro NCAP crash test for adult protection, while crash test results of the previous gen Daihatsu Mira that the Perodua Viva is based managed a 3 star rating.

Perodua Myvi 1300cc Premium AT Solid: RM48,792.60
Perodua Myvi 1300cc Premium AT Metallic: RM49,315.80
The differences between the non-Premium and Premium versions of the Perodua Viva is roughly about RM4,000, while in the Myvi it is only about RM2,900 or so.
So yeah, Perodua Viva 1000cc Premium Auto Metallic at RM44,200 or the Perodua Myvi 1300cc Premium AT Metallic at RM49,315.80? That’s a difference of about RM5,000 there for a bigger engine, slightly more performance, a minor decrease in fuel consumption frugalness, a wider interior space, and a bigger boot.
The boot space doesn’t matter to me - both boots are too small for serious usage unless you put the rear bench seats down.
Is that extra RM5,000 to go from A-segment to B-segment worth it, or would you rather save the money?

Issues of talking save proton-failed
According to a report by The Edge, talks between car maker Proton Holding Bhd and Europe’s largest automaker, Volkswagen AG—and maker of renowned Volkswagen Van parts--- that have began last year have not been pushing through according to what the Malaysian government is hoping for.
The weekly newspaper has reported that officials from Proton and Volkswagen had met several times but no concrete agreement has been developed. The newspaper also added that the talks have not been going well and that it seems like the German automaker has somewhat “cooled off” and appeared less eager lately.
The newspaper has also quoted a source familiar with the situation as saying, “This delay could reveal some doubts.” The Malaysian government is also under pressure to announce details of partnership for loss-making Proton, which has lost its status as the country’s biggest-selling car maker rival Perodua. The government believes that news of Proton’s partnership with Volkswagen can help it to recover.
Last week, Proton announced its third consecutive quarter of losses which it blames on increased competition and sluggish sales. The company obtained a net loss of 281.45 mln rgt for the third quarter ended December compared to the net profit it has made a year earlier amounting to 86.51 mln rgt.
The second Minister of Finance Nor Mohamad Yakcop said that the government would release an announcement on the Proton’s strategic partner this month. Nobody knows whether it would still be Volkswagen or some other company. But according to The Edge newspaper, “If this schedule is adhered to strictly, sources say General Motors, the world’s largest automaker, could well become the partner of choice for Proton.”
The main objective of having Proton partnered with a foreign automaker is to prevent another foreseen decline in its market share as competition heats up. It should be noted that when news of a possible partnership with Volkswagen have leaked out the shares of Proton has increased but after the news of the partnership was not confirmed the shares of Proton plunged.
Aside from Volkswagen, Proton has also been in talks with GM and PSA Peugeot Citroen of France plus some three Malaysian automotive firms that have expressed the interest in purchasing stakes in the company. It should be noted that the Malaysian government owns 59 percent of Proton including a stake of 43% held by Khazanah Nasional, the investment arm of the government.

I said that Proton will bleed further if Perodua launch a new model this year. Well, Perodua did launch Viva and based on the numbers of people at Peroduas’ showrooms in Kuala Lumpur, Prai and Sungai Petani, I think it is going to gain more market share at Proton’s expense. Proton made a mistake by hanging to Wira for so long.
I visited a Perodua showroom last Sunday and from the look of it, people are going to accept Viva. However I like to point out something that will discourage people from owning a Viva especially the lower end ones. Most of the accessories like electrical side mirror (retractable), power windows, reverse sensor, ABS and SRS airbags are only available on the 1000cc and some are only for the premium version. Although it has a line up of exciting new colors, offers CD player and 4 speakers, but the the 660cc and 850cc have no power steering. If you are planning to buy Viva, please take note of this.
[Updated 22 July 2007] These pictures are of the 660cc Passion Red. As you can see the engine is quite compact, that’s where the space comes from. Viva interior length is longer than Myvi. It’s a Twincam 12V DVVT engine. Viva is very comfortable and you will not feel like driving a small car. For a person who is 1.72cm tall and weights 93KG, I find it comfortable when compared to a Kancil.
Up close and personal with our Perodua Viva
According to Perodua, it has stopped production of its Kelisa model since December 2006 and the Kancil will follow suit in a year … oh .. by the way, some people like to blog about cars they can’t afford. When I blog about cars, it’s either about racing like Formula 1 or the ones I can afford
Anyway, if you are still thinking whether to get a Viva or the old Kancil. Get a Viva. It’s much better in term of space and handling, even though you will get additional discount for buying that Kancil. In terms of fuel consumption or fuel efficiency, check out the table below for Viva’s fuel consumption. If you only care about getting from point A to point B in the cheapest way possible, this is the car.
